Median Difference

Median difference is a statistical measure that compares the central values of two datasets, showing how their typical observations differ. To calculate it, researchers order each dataset, identify its median, and subtract one median from the other; for paired data, they may first calculate each within-pair difference and then summarize those differences with their median. Because medians depend on rank rather than extreme numerical values, the measure is useful for skewed distributions or data containing outliers. In statistics, median difference supports group comparisons, treatment effect assessment, and nonparametric analysis when the mean may poorly represent the data.

Median

Besides mean, the median is a widely used measure of central tendency. Typically, median is defined as the central or middle value of a data set, measured by arranging the data elements in an increasing or decreasing order. Since this middle value is not affected by the precise numerical values of the outliers or fluctuations, it is insensitive to them. Hence, in cases where a data set may have outliers or the extreme values are not known, the median is a better measure of the central tendency...

Sign Test for Median of Single Population

2025

In general, the sign test serves as a nonparametric method to test hypotheses about the median of a single population when the data does not follow a known distribution. This simplicity makes it particularly useful for small sample sizes or when the assumptions of parametric tests cannot be met. The process begins with identifying a null hypothesis, typically stating that the population median equals a specific value. The alternative hypothesis could be that the median is either not equal to,...

Just-noticeable Differences

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Psychophysics is a branch of psychology and neuroscience that tries to explain how physical quantities are translated into neural firing and mental representations of magnitude. One set of questions in this area pertains to just-noticeable differences (JND): How much does something need to change in order for the change to be perceivable? To pump intuitions about this, consider the fact that small children grow at an enormous...

Assessing Differences in Sperm Competitive Ability in Drosophila

2013

Differential sperm competitive ability among Drosophila males with distinct genotypes can be ascertained through double-mating experiments. Each of these experiments involves one of the males of interest and a reference male. Readily identifiable markers in the progeny allow inference of the fraction of individuals fathered by each male.

Electric Potential and Potential Difference

Suppose a positive test charge moves away from a positive static charge, then the Coulomb force does positive work, and its electric potential energy decreases. The potential energy per unit charge is defined as the electric potential. The electric potential is independent of the test charge. When a test charge moves from the initial to the final position, the electric potential difference between those positions is defined as the ratio of the change in the potential energy to the charge on the...
