Percentage Trimming

Percentage trimming is a statistical procedure that removes a specified percentage of the smallest and largest observations before summarizing a dataset. By excluding equal proportions from both tails of an ordered sample, trimming reduces the influence of outliers and produces measures such as the trimmed mean, which can better represent the central pattern of skewed or heavy-tailed data. Researchers use percentage trimming in robust statistics, data cleaning, and comparative analyses when extreme values may distort conventional means. The chosen trimming percentage affects the balance between resistance to unusual observations and retention of genuine variation, so it should be reported alongside the resulting estimate.

Trimmed Mean

While measuring the mean of a data set, care needs to be taken when associating the mean to its central tendency. The same goes for the arithmetic mean, the geometric mean, or the harmonic mean. This is because the presence of a single outlier data value can significantly affect the mean. That is, the mean is sensitive to fluctuations in the data set. Although certain measures of central tendency are not sensitive to outliers, there are alternative versions of the mean that get around the...

The price elasticity of demand measures the responsiveness of the quantity demanded of a good or service to changes in its price. For instance, consider a family that typically purchases 6 cartons of milk every month when the price is $4 per carton. However, when the price increases to $5 per carton, they reduce their consumption to 5 cartons. The first step to calculate the price elasticity of demand is determining the percentage change in quantity demanded. This can be calculated as (5-6)/6...

A percentage frequency distribution, in general, is a display of data that indicates the percentage of observations for each data point or grouping of data points. It is a commonly used method for expressing the relative frequency of survey responses and other data. The percentage frequency distributions are often displayed as bar graphs, pie charts, or tables. The process of making a percentage frequency distribution involves the following few steps: note the total number of observations;...

Elasticity of Supply Through Percentage Method

The elasticity of supply (Es) quantifies how responsive the quantity supplied is to changes in price. It is calculated as the ratio of the percentage change in quantity supplied to the percentage change in price. For example, if the price of a product increases by 10%, and as a result, the quantity supplied increases by 20%, the Es would be 2 (20% change in quantity supplied divided by 10% change in price). This method helps determine whether supply is elastic, inelastic, or unit elastic. If...
