Mitoz, bir hücrenin genetik materyalinin iki yavru hücre arasında bölündüğü bir hücre bölünmesi şeklidir.

Ökaryotlarda hücre bölünme döngüsü, hücre büyümesini, DNA replikasyonunu/kromozom çoğalmasını, yavru hücrelere kromozom dağıtımını ve son olarak hücre bölünmesini içeren farklı, koordineli hücresel süreçlere bölünmüştür. Hücre döngüsü, düzenleyici sistemlerin yanı sıra hücre çoğalmasını etkileyen hücre dışı sinyaller tarafından sıkı bir şekilde düzenlenir. Hücre döngüsünün süreçleri yaklaşık 24 saat içinde (tipik insan hücrelerinde) ve iki ana aşamada gerçekleşir. İlk aşama, interfazın S fazı sırasında DNA replikasyonudur. İkinci aşama, kopyalanmış kromozomların iki yeni çekirdeğe ayrılmasını (mitoz) ve sitoplazmik bölünmeyi (sitokinez) içeren mitotik (M) fazdır. İki faz, hücrenin replikasyon ve bölünmeye hazırlandığı aralıklarla (G1 ve G2 boşlukları) ayrılır. Mitoz Süreci Mitoz beş ayrı aşamaya ayrılabilir: profaz, prometafaz, metafaz, anafaz ve telofaz. Anafaz veya telofaz (hücreye bağlı olarak) sırasında başlayan sitokinez, M fazının bir parçasıdır ancak mitozun bir parçası değildir. Profaz Hücre mitoza girerken, kopyalanan kromozomlar yoğunlaşmaya başlar ve kondensin adı verilen proteinlerin yardımıyla ipliksi yapılar halinde görünür hale gelir. Mitotik iğ aygıtı, S fazı sırasında kopyalanan sentrozomlar arasında oluşmaya başlar ve hücrenin zıt kutuplarına göç eder. Mil, tübülin protein monomerlerinden oluşan mikrotübül adı verilen filamentli yapılardan oluşur. Mil mikrotübülleri yoğunlaşmış kromozomlara doğru uzanmaya başlar. Prometafaz Prometafaz sırasında, iğ aygıtından gelen mikrotübül filamentleri büyümeye devam eder ve kromozomlar yoğunlaşmayı tamamlar. Nükleer zarf tamamen parçalanır ve kromozomlar serbest kalır. Mikrotübüllerin bir kısmı serbest bırakılan kromozomlara bağlanır ve her bir kardeş kromatid çiftinin sentromerinde bulunan kinetokore adı verilen bir protein yapısına bağlanır. Kromozomlara bağlanmayan iğ mikrotübülleri (polar ve astral mikrotübüller), iğleri birbirinden ayırmaya ve iğ kutuplarını hücre zarına tutturmaya yardımcı olur. Metafaz İğ mikrotübülleri, tamamen yoğunlaşmış kardeş kromatidlerin her bir çiftini, hücrenin ekvatoru boyunca, yani metafaz plakasında hizalar. Hücre artık bölünmeye hazırdır. Anafaz Kinetokor yapısına bağlanan zıt iğ kutuplarından gelen mikrotübüller, sentromerdeki kardeş kromatidleri kısaltır ve ayırır. Kromatitleri bir arada tutan kohezyon proteinleri artık parçalanır. Kısalan kinetochore mikrotübülleri, çiftin (şimdi kromozom olarak adlandırılan) her bir kromatidinin zıt bir kutba göç etmesine neden olur.
