The units are laid in rows called coursing. Mortar, a mix of water, cement, and sand, binds the units together. Building with masonry is hands-on and can be done with basic tools. A trowel applies mortar, a hammer helps adjust placement, and levels check that the courses stay even and the wall stays vertical.

A solid foundation is important for masonry to remain stable and durable. Masonry can serve as a load-bearing part of a building. It is also used in non-structural ways for facades or veneers, where appearance matters. It can also be used to make fireplaces and chimneys.
