Concrete tensile strength is limited by tiny cracks inside the material. The cement paste itself can be much stronger in theory than it is in practice. In real concrete, the measured strength can be up to a thousand times lower than the theoretical value.

These small cracks help explain that gap. When a load is applied, stress rises at the crack tips. This idea is described by Griffith's theory of brittle fracture. In brittle materials, cracks can grow quickly once the stress at their tips becomes high enough.

Specimen size also changes the result. Larger concrete samples are more likely to contain many critical cracks. That makes them more likely to fail than smaller samples. The shape of the specimen matters too, because it affects how stress is distributed through the material.

The cracks inside concrete also help decide where failure starts. The highest stress concentrations form at crack tips, and crack direction matters relative to the applied load. Failure often follows the boundary between cement paste and the larger aggregate particles. In some cases, the fracture path can pass through the aggregates themselves.
