Integration by parts is a calculus method for handling integrals that contain a product of two functions. It is useful when direct integration is not practical. The method comes from the product rule for differentiation, which says that the derivative of a product is the derivative of the first function times the second, plus the first function times the derivative of the second.

By integrating that product-rule identity and rearranging the terms, the integration by parts formula is obtained. In this process, one function is chosen for differentiation and called u. The other is chosen for integration and called dv. The method works best when the u term becomes simpler after differentiation and the dv term can be integrated directly.

A clear application appears in alternating current, or AC, circuits. In this setting, current can be written as a product of time-dependent functions, such as a linearly increasing amplitude with a sinusoidal waveform. To find the voltage across a capacitor, the product must be integrated over time. Choosing one part of the current for differentiation and the other for integration makes the calculation manageable.

Integration by parts is useful not only in calculus problems, but also in engineering settings that involve complex signals and changing systems. It helps turn a difficult product into simpler terms that can be evaluated step by step. That makes it a key tool for translating physical relationships into mathematical expressions.
