Improper Integrals: Infinite Intervals

Improper integrals with infinite intervals appear when one limit of integration goes to positive or negative infinity. In that case, the area under the curve is unbounded, so ordinary definite integral methods do not apply directly. The integral is then defined by a limit, which helps show whether the total area is finite even when the interval is infinite.

This idea is useful in exponential decay models. One example is the total integrated intensity of light moving through a uniform medium, such as fog over an infinite distance. The light intensity can be written as I0e−kx, where I0 is the initial intensity and k is a positive decay constant.

To find the total integrated intensity, the integral is rewritten as a limit and evaluated. The result includes an exponential term, e−kt. As t approaches infinity, that term approaches zero. This leaves a finite total, showing that an infinite distance can still give a finite accumulated intensity when the function decays exponentially.
