Dominant taxa include Staphylococcus epidermidis, Cutibacterium acnes (formerly Propionibacterium acnes), and various Corynebacterium species. Blinking mechanically clears microbes from the ocular surface, while tear fluid, enriched with antimicrobial peptides (e.g., lysozyme, lactoferrin, and defensins), imposes selective pressure on microbial colonization. These defenses contribute to the ocular surface's low microbial diversity.On the other hand, the eyelid margins and meibomian glands show higher microbial diversity. These areas are in direct contact with the skin and secrete lipid-rich substances that support a broader range of microorganisms. The microbial inhabitants here are more reflective of cutaneous communities and include both commensal and opportunistic species.The ocular microbiota contributes to immune modulation and pathogen exclusion. The eye has a small but specialized microbiota that helps support ocular surface defense. This microbial community is shaped by the eye’s unique anatomy and immune environment. It mostly lives on the conjunctiva and along the eyelid margins.

The conjunctival surface carries fewer microbial species than nearby facial skin. Common members include Staphylococcus epidermidis, Cutibacterium acnes, and Corynebacterium species. Blinking helps wash microbes away, and tears add another layer of protection. Tear fluid contains antimicrobial peptides such as lysozyme, lactoferrin, and defensins, which make it harder for many microbes to grow.

The eyelid margins and meibomian glands show greater microbial diversity. These areas stay in direct contact with the skin, and they secrete lipid-rich material that can support a wider range of microorganisms. The microbes found there are more similar to skin communities and include both commensal species, which normally live on the body, and opportunistic species, which can sometimes cause disease.

Ocular microbes also help shape immune responses and block pathogens. They interact with innate immune receptors on epithelial cells and immune cells, which helps tune inflammation. When this balance changes, such as after antibiotic use, environmental stress, or certain systemic conditions, eye problems like blepharitis, conjunctivitis, and dry eye disease may occur. In rare cases, microbes can enter the normally sterile intraocular spaces after surgery, trauma, or the presence of foreign bodies, leading to serious infections such as endophthalmitis.
