Orthodontic Archwire Testing

Orthodontic archwire testing is the biomechanical evaluation of wires used to guide tooth movement, helping determine whether their mechanical behavior is suitable for clinical treatment. In controlled experiments, researchers measure force, deflection, stiffness, elasticity, and springback as an archwire bends or is loaded, often using three-point bending or tensile tests under defined conditions. These measurements reveal how wire composition, geometry, and surface properties influence the delivery and stability of orthodontic forces. In bioengineering, archwire testing supports material selection, device design, quality control, and the development of safer, more predictable orthodontic systems.

Force System with Vertical V-Bends: A 3D In Vitro Assessment of Elastic and Rigid Rectangular Archwires

2018

The method presented here is designed to construct and validate an in vitro 3D model capable of measuring the force system generated by different archwires with V-bends placed between two brackets. Additional objectives are to compare this force system with different types of archwires and to previous models.

Here, we present a protocol for studying orthodontic tooth movement (OTM), serving as a suitable model for investigating the mechanisms of bone adaptation, root resorption, and the response of bone cells to mechanical stimuli. This comprehensive guide provides detailed information on the OTM model, micro-computed tomography acquisition, and subsequent analysis.

The Establishment of a Murine Maxillary Orthodontic Model

Anxiety Testing

2023

Anxiety is a commonly observed behavioral disorder that stems from fear. It is described as increased restlessness, or unpleasant feelings of fear over anticipated events. Experimenters often use rodent models to better understand anxiety disorders in humans. They use different paradigms, like exposing rodents to bright spaces or loud sounds, which are known to induce fear. These tests combined with other interventions such as surgery or drug-administration may assist researchers in pinpointing...

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA Wood is a ubiquitous material that has been used in construction from the earliest times. Wood is a renewable, sustainable material with great aesthetic value. Today, there are probably more buildings constructed with wood than any other structural material. Many of these buildings are singlefamily residences, but many larger apartment buildings, as well as commercial and industrial buildings,...
