Pdms Egg Cups

PDMS egg cups are small, molded structures made from polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) that hold eggs or embryos in defined positions during bioengineering experiments. Their recessed cup geometry stabilizes specimens while the flexible, transparent elastomer provides gentle confinement and optical access for imaging or manipulation. Researchers can use these devices to organize biological samples for microscopy, microinjection, culture, and other controlled procedures, improving handling consistency and experimental reproducibility. Because PDMS can be formed into customized microscale features, egg cups also support the development of specialized platforms for studying development, designing biomimetic systems, and integrating biological samples with microfluidic technologies.

This video describes a protocol to isolate the retinal cup without the outer covering layers from the eyeball of a mouse. The extracted retinal tissue can help study various metabolic pathways occurring in the retinal cells.

Drosophila Egg Collection and Dechorionation: A Method to Remove the Outermost Egg Layer

2023

The Drosophila embryo is surrounded by protective outer membranes. To gain access to the embryo, the chorion–the outermost of the membranes–is often removed. This video describes a commonly used method of dechorionation using sodium hypochlorite. The example protocol demonstrates the procedure while employing sterile techniques necessary for axenic or gnotobiotic animal rearing.

Microfluidic double emulsions generation typically involves devices with patterned wettability or custom-fabricated glass components. Here we describe the fabrication and testing of an all polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) double emulsion generator that does not require surface treatment or complicated fabrication processes, and is capable of producing double emulsions down to 14 µm.
