Acid Stress

Acid stress is a biological condition in which exposure to an unusually low pH disrupts cellular function, making it important for understanding survival, disease, and environmental adaptation. Excess hydrogen ions can enter cells or alter cellular compartments, disturbing enzyme activity, protein stability, membrane integrity, and ion balance; organisms respond by regulating internal pH, exporting protons, and activating protective pathways. In biology, studying acid stress helps explain how microbes persist in acidic habitats, how plants respond to acidic soils, and how animal tissues adapt to changes in acidity. These insights support research on microbial ecology, crop productivity, infection, cellular injury, and stress-resistant organisms.

(2016)This video demonstrates the use of recombinant E. coli cultures to evaluate the protective effect of an acid-activated chaperone during acid stress. Bacterial growth monitoring reveals enhanced survival in chaperone-expressing cultures compared to controls, highlighting the role of chaperones in protein stabilization under stress conditions.

Responses to Heat and Cold Stress

Every organism has an optimum temperature range within which healthy growth and physiological functioning can occur. At the ends of this range, there will be a minimum and maximum temperature that interrupt biological processes. When the environmental dynamics fall out of the optimal limit for a given species, changes in metabolism and functioning occur – and this is defined as stress. Plants respond to stress by initiating changes in gene expression - leading to adjustments in plant...

Responses to Salt Stress

Salt stress—which can be triggered by high salt concentrations in a plant’s environment—can significantly affect plant growth and crop production by influencing photosynthesis and the absorption of water and nutrients. Plant cell cytoplasm has a high solute concentration, which causes water to flow from the soil into the plant due to osmosis. However, excess salt in the surrounding soil increases the soil solute concentration, reducing the plant’s ability to take up water. High levels of...
