Anterior Touch

Anterior touch is a mechanosensory response in which an organism detects contact with the front part of its body and produces an appropriate behavioral reaction. In the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, gentle stimulation of the anterior body is detected by specialized touch-receptor neurons, which transmit signals through neural circuits that initiate backward locomotion and help the animal move away from the stimulus. Researchers use anterior-touch assays to assess sensory detection, neuronal signaling, and behavioral plasticity in living animals. The response provides a tractable model for studying mechanotransduction, neural circuit function, and genetic or environmental effects on behavior.

Responses to Gravity and Touch

Gravitropism: Plant Responses to Gravity Higher plants sense gravity using statocytes, cells found near the vascular tissue in shoots, and in the root cap columella in roots. Statocytes contain starch-filled organelles called statoliths. The statoliths settle, or sediment, at the bottom of the statocyte in the direction of gravity. Statolith sedimentation triggers a signaling cascade, resulting in the asymmetrical distribution of the plant hormone auxin across root and shoot tips. This...

Fat pad aspiration is a preferred, minimally invasive, and low cost approach as compared to other methods to detect amyloid for diagnosis of systemic amyloidosis. This video article demonstrates a procedural outline for performing fat pad aspiration with appropriate processing of the specimen for the optimal diagnostic outcome.
