Tumor Bio-distribution

Tumor biodistribution describes how a drug, biologic, nanoparticle, or imaging agent distributes between tumors and normal tissues after administration, a key factor in cancer treatment and diagnosis. Its pattern depends on blood flow, tumor vascular permeability, transport through the interstitial space, cellular uptake, and clearance, which together determine tissue exposure and retention. Researchers measure these processes using imaging, tissue sampling, and quantitative assays to assess whether an agent reaches its intended target. Tumor biodistribution studies guide dose selection, delivery-system design, therapeutic efficacy, and safety evaluation while revealing barriers to effective treatment.

Source: Peiman Shahbeigi-Roodposhti and Sina Shahbazmohamadi, Biomedical Engineering Department, University of Connecticut, Storrs, Connecticut Nanoparticles have been increasingly used research towards targeted drug delivery and controlled drug release. While most of these particles have been developed as polymeric or liposomal particles because of their biocompatibility, there is a trend in current research toward the use of metallic and magnetic nanoparticles. These metallic nanoparticles...

An In Vivo Immunofluorescence Localization Method to Study Antibody Biodistribution

2025

This video demonstrates an in vivo immunofluorescence localization (IVIL) technique to study the biodistribution of tumor-targeting antibodies in a murine model of breast cancer. Upon the intravenous injection of a tumor-specific antibody in the mouse, the tumor is surgically isolated, and the localization of the antibody within the tumor tissue is confirmed via ex vivo immunostaining.

Plant viral nanoparticles (VNPs) are promising platforms for applications in biomedicine. Here, we describe the procedures for plant VNP propagation, purification, characterization, and bioconjugation. Finally, we show the application of VNPs for tumor homing and imaging using a mouse xenograft model and fluorescence imaging.

Acute and Chronic Models of Hyperglycemia in Zebrafish: A Method to Assess the Impact of Hyperglycemia on Neurogenesis and the Biodistribution of Radiolabeled Molecules

This work describes methods to establish acute and chronic hyperglycemia models in zebrafish. The aim is to investigate the impact of hyperglycemia on physiological processes, such as constitutive and injury-induced neurogenesis. The work also highlights the use of zebrafish to follow radiolabeled molecules (here, [18F]-FDG) using PET/CT.
