Carbanion Character

Carbanion character describes the extent to which a carbon atom bears excess electron density and behaves like a negatively charged carbon center, even when no formal carbanion is drawn. It arises when bond polarization, resonance, inductive effects, or orbital hybridization stabilize electron density at carbon; greater s character and delocalization influence its stability, basicity, and nucleophilicity. In chemistry, analyzing carbanion character helps explain the behavior of enolates, organometallic reagents, ylides, and reactive intermediates in substitution and addition reactions. This concept supports prediction of reaction mechanisms, regioselectivity, acidity, and how substituents alter carbon-centered reactivity.

Bond Polarity, Dipole Moment, and Percent Ionic Character

Bond Polarity The absolute value of the difference in electronegativity (ΔEN) of two bonded atoms provides a rough measure of the polarity to be expected in the bond and, thus, the bond type. When the difference is very small or zero, the bond is covalent and nonpolar. When it is large, the bond is polar covalent or ionic. The absolute values of the electronegativity differences between the atoms in the bonds H–H, H–Cl, and Na–Cl are 0 (nonpolar), 0.9 (polar covalent), and 2.1 (ionic),...

Researchers adopt both the lexical decision task and the naming task to investigate some important topics such as character/word recognition by comparing the frequency effect between these two tasks. This article introduces this approach through two exemplar experiments and elaborates on the underlying logic.

Mental Rotation

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Visual mental imagery refers to the ability to conjure images in one’s mind’s eye. This allows people to process visual material above and beyond the constraints of a current point-of-view; for example, a person could imagine, using their mind’s eye, how something might look in a different color, or what it would look like if it were made from a different material or rotated and seen from a different perspective. Mental imagery...
