Electrostatic Potential Map

An electrostatic potential map is a visual representation of the electric potential surrounding a molecule, showing how its charge distribution influences interactions with nearby particles. It is calculated from the positions of atomic nuclei and the molecular electron density, then projected onto a molecular surface and displayed with a color scale that distinguishes regions of relatively positive and negative potential. In chemistry, these maps help identify likely electrophilic and nucleophilic sites, hydrogen-bonding regions, and patterns of molecular polarity. They support interpretation of chemical reactivity, intermolecular recognition, solvation behavior, and the design of molecules with targeted interactions.

Electrostatic Boundary Conditions

Consider an external electric field propagating through a homogeneous medium. When the electric field crosses the surface boundary of the medium, it undergoes a discontinuity. The electric field can be resolved into normal and tangential components. The amount by which the field changes at any boundary is given by the difference between the field components above and below the surface boundary. The surface integral of an electric field is given by Gauss's law in integral form and is related to...

Removing recently deposited and incompletely decomposed plant material from soil samples reduces the influence of temporary seasonal inputs on soil organic carbon measurements. Attraction to an electrostatically charged surface can be used to quickly remove a substantial amount of particulate organic matter.

Electrostatic Boundary Conditions in Dielectrics

2023

When an electric field passes from one homogeneous medium to another, crossing the boundary between the two mediums imparts a discontinuity in the electric field. This results in electrostatic boundary conditions that depend on the type of mediums the field propagates through. Consider a case where both the mediums across a boundary are two different dielectric materials. Recall that the electric field and electric displacement are proportional and related through the material's permittivity.

Source: Yong P. Chen, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, College of Science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN Electric potential, also known as "voltage", measures the electric potential energy per unit charge. Electric field is a scalar quantity and is fundamental to many electrical effects. Like potential energy, what is physically meaningful is the difference in the electric potential. For example, the spatial variation in the electric potential is related to the electric...

Potential Energy

The energy stored by a structure and location of matter in space is called potential energy. For instance, raising a kettlebell changes its spatial location and increases its potential energy. Similarly, a stretched rubber band contains potential energy which, under certain conditions, can be converted into other forms of energy, such as kinetic energy. Chemical bonds that form attractive forces between atoms also contain potential energy, called chemical energy. When a chemical reaction...
