Light Frequency

Light frequency is the rate at which an electromagnetic wave oscillates, measured in hertz, and it determines the energy carried by each photon. In chemistry, photon energy increases with frequency according to E = hν, while frequency and wavelength are inversely related; when light matches the energy difference between molecular or atomic states, it can be absorbed and promote electronic, vibrational, or rotational transitions. Measuring these frequency-dependent interactions forms the basis of spectroscopy, including ultraviolet-visible, infrared, and nuclear magnetic resonance methods. Chemists use light frequency to identify substances, determine molecular structure, monitor reactions, and study how matter responds to electromagnetic radiation.

The Wave Nature of Light

2020

The nature of light has been a subject of inquiry since antiquity. In the seventeenth century, Isaac Newton performed experiments with lenses and prisms and was able to demonstrate that white light consists of the individual colors of the rainbow combined together. Newton explained his optics findings in terms of a "corpuscular" view of light, in which light was composed of streams of extremely tiny particles traveling at high speeds according to Newton's laws of motion. Others in the...

Intense pulsed light with the Optical Pulse Technology platform has US Food and Drug Association approval for the management of Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)-associated Dry Eye Disease (DED) by improving meibomian gland function and reducing inflammation. Radiofrequency treatments result in meibum melting. Combination therapy may offer superior outcomes for DED and MGD.

What is a Frequency Distribution

2023

A frequency is the number of times a value of the data occurs. The sum of all the frequency values represents the total number of students included in the sample. It is commonly used to group data of quantitative types. Frequency distributions can be displayed in a table, histogram, line graph, dot plot, or pie chart, just to name a few. A histogram is a graphical representation of tabulated frequencies, shown as adjacent rectangles, erected over discrete intervals (bins), with an area equal to...

Mean From a Frequency Distribution

Sometimes, data gathered from an experiment on a large sample or population are organized into concise tables. In such cases, the frequency of the quantitative data set is plotted in the form of a table. Or else, the data values are grouped into the quantity’s intervals, which form classes, and their respective frequencies are known. That is, the data values are distributed over different categories or classes. This is known as frequency distribution. When such a data set is encountered, the...
