Nitric Acid Handling

Nitric acid handling comprises the procedures used to store, transfer, dilute, and use nitric acid safely, an essential practice because this strong acid is highly corrosive and can also act as a powerful oxidizer. In water, it dissociates extensively, while dilution releases heat; contact with incompatible organic materials, reducing agents, or certain metals can produce hazardous reactions. Safe chemistry practice therefore combines appropriate protective equipment, effective ventilation, compatible containers, secure storage, and careful addition of acid to water during dilution. These controls reduce exposure, splashes, fires, and unintended reactions, supporting reliable laboratory work, chemical synthesis, analytical procedures, and industrial processing.

Source: Robert M. Rioux & Taslima A. Zaman, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA A mineral acid (or inorganic acid) is defined as a water-soluble acid derived from inorganic minerals by chemical reaction as opposed to organic acids (e.g. acetic acid, formic acid). Examples of mineral acids include: • Boric acid (CAS No.10043-35-3) • Chromic acid (CAS No.1333-82-0) • Hydrochloric acid (CAS No.7647-01-0) • Hydrofluoric acid (CAS No. 7664-39-3) • Nitric acid (CAS No. 7697-37-2) •...

Vascular cell functiondepends on activity of intracellular messengers. Described here is an ex vivo two photon imaging method that allows the measurement of intracellular calcium and nitric oxide levels in response to physiological and pharmacological stimuli in individual endothelial and smooth muscle cells of an isolated aorta.

The endogenous production of nitric oxide (NO) regulates a wide variety of biological functions. It is becoming increasingly clear that disruption or dysregulation of NO based signaling is involved in many human diseases. Methods to quantify relevant NO metabolites may provide novel diagnostic or prognostic biomarkers for human disease.

Handling Chemical Spills

Source: Robert M. Rioux & Taslima Zaman, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Since chemicals are commonly used for laboratory research purposes, it is extremely important to be adequately prepared to handle chemical spills or accidental release of hazardous chemicals, which can happen at any time. No matter how minor a spill may be, the inability to respond in an emergency situation could severely endanger public health or the environment. All chemical spills must be properly...

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Acclimation and Positive Reinforcement Training Pigs are social animals that respond best to calm, low-stress handling techniques. Acclimation and positive reinforcement training are important refinement strategies recommended...
