Octet Completion

Octet completion is the tendency of atoms to achieve eight electrons in their valence shell, a principle that helps explain chemical bonding and molecular structure. Atoms can approach this stable arrangement by gaining or losing electrons to form ions, or by sharing electrons in covalent bonds; Lewis structures represent these valence-electron arrangements and bonding pairs. In chemistry, octet completion supports predictions of compound formulas, bond types, and molecular connectivity, particularly for main-group elements. Although hydrogen, boron, and expanded-valence elements may follow different patterns, the concept provides a useful foundation for interpreting reactivity, electronegativity, and the formation of stable substances.

Exceptions to the Octet Rule

Many covalent molecules have central atoms that do not have eight electrons in their Lewis structures. These molecules fall into three categories: Odd-electron molecules have an odd number of valence electrons and therefore have an unpaired electron. Electron-deficient molecules have a central atom with fewer electrons than needed for a noble gas configuration. Hypervalent molecules have a central atom that has more electrons than needed for a noble gas configuration. Odd-electron...

Lewis Symbols and the Octet Rule

Chemical bonds are complex interactions between two or more atoms or ions, which reduce the potential energy of the molecule. Gilbert N. Lewis developed a model called the Lewis model that simplified the depiction of chemical bond formation and provided straightforward explanations for the chemical bonds seen in most common compounds. Lewis Model The Lewis model depicts chemical bond formation by the sharing or transfer of valence electrons, which helps to attain a stable electron...

Complete Information and Asymmetric Information: Meaning

Complete information means all participants in a transaction know all relevant details. For example, in perfect competition, both buyers and sellers know about the availability of alternative products, product prices, the number of competitors, and the quality of the products. However, in real markets, the participants usually have different levels of information, which leads to a market environment of asymmetric information.Asymmetric information occurs when one party in a market transaction...

The asset side of a balance sheet shows what a company owns at a specific time. It is typically organized in order of liquidity—how quickly an asset can be converted to cash. Assets are divided into two main categories: current and non-current (or fixed).Current Assets are short-term and expected to be converted into cash within a year. These include:Cash and cash equivalents: The Most liquid assets, like cash in hand or bank balances.Accounts receivable: Amounts owed by customers.Inventory:...
