Plutonium Dioxide

Plutonium dioxide (PuO₂) is a stable, ceramic plutonium compound studied in chemistry because its structure, oxidation state, and resistance to chemical change influence nuclear-materials science. It typically contains plutonium in the +4 oxidation state within a fluorite-type crystal lattice, where strong plutonium–oxygen bonding contributes to its high melting point and low solubility in water. These properties make PuO₂ useful as a component of mixed-oxide nuclear fuel and as a durable form for handling and storing plutonium. Research also examines its phase behavior, surface chemistry, sintering, and interactions with other materials to improve fuel performance, waste management, and nuclear safety.

The technique of diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) is proposed for speciation studies of plutonium. This protocol describes diffusion experiments probing the behavior of Pu(IV) and Pu(V) in presence of organic matter. DGTs deployed in a karstic spring allow assessment of the bioavailability of Pu.

Carbon Dioxide Transport in the Blood

2024

Carbon dioxide (CO2) transport in the blood is critical to human physiology. On average, our body cells produce around 200 mL of CO2 per minute, precisely the quantity expelled by the lungs. This process involves the transportation of CO2 from the tissue cells to the lungs in three primary forms. Forms of CO2 Transport 1. Dissolved in plasma: A small percentage (7-10%) of CO2 is transported and dissolved directly in the plasma. 2. Carbaminohemoglobin: Just over 20% of CO2 is chemically bound to...
