Pure Crystalline Substance

A pure crystalline substance is a solid composed of one chemical species whose atoms, ions, or molecules occupy a regular, repeating three-dimensional lattice. It forms when particles organize during crystallization under suitable conditions, such as controlled cooling or solvent evaporation, producing an ordered structure and a characteristic composition and melting behavior. Chemists use pure crystals to identify compounds, assess purity, and determine molecular or crystal structure through methods such as X-ray diffraction. In pharmaceutical, materials, and analytical chemistry, crystallization can isolate valuable substances, control solid-state properties, and improve the consistency and performance of chemical products.

Polymer Classification: Crystallinity

2023

Unlike ionic or small covalent molecules, polymers do not form crystalline solids due to the diffusion limitations of their long-chain structures. However, polymers contain microscopic crystalline domains separated by amorphous domains. Crystalline domains are the regions where polymer chains are aligned in an orderly manner and held together in proximity by intermolecular forces. For example, chains in the crystalline domains of polyethylene and nylon are bound together by van der Waals...

Shaking promotes aeration and distributes nutrients evenly, supporting exponential growth and resulting in a uniform, metabolically active suspension suitable for downstream applications.

Substance Use Disorders Affecting Sleep

2024

Substance use disorders involve a pattern of using drugs more extensively than intended and continuing use despite harmful consequences. This includes legal substances like alcohol and nicotine, as well as illegal drugs. These disorders often involve both physical and psychological dependence, reflecting compulsive use of substances that significantly alter thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, contributing to a major public health issue. Understanding the concepts of physical dependence,...

Deleterious Substances in Aggregate

2024

Deleterious substances in aggregates can be detrimental to the quality and durability of concrete. These substances include organic impurities like loam, which interfere with cement hydration and are usually present in the sand. These prevent a good bond between aggregate and cement paste. Organic impurities can be detected using the colorimetric test, where the darkness of a solution after agitation indicates the level of organic content. Another type of impurity is clay and fine material that...

2016

A novel methodology is presented to synthesize and program main-chain liquid-crystalline elastomers using commercially available starting monomers. A wide range of thermomechanical properties was tailored by adjusting the amount of crosslinker, while the actuation performance was dependent on the amount of applied strain during programming.
