Radio Frequency

Radio frequency is a range of electromagnetic radiation, commonly spanning about 3 kHz to 300 GHz, that carries energy through oscillating electric and magnetic fields. In chemistry, radio-frequency fields interact with matter by driving transitions, heating materials through molecular motion, or manipulating nuclear spins in a magnetic field, depending on frequency and experimental conditions. These principles support nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, radio-frequency heating, plasma generation, and other analytical or synthetic techniques. By linking molecular structure to measurable signals and controlled energy transfer, radio frequency methods help researchers identify compounds, monitor reactions, process materials, and study chemical environments.

2025

Intense pulsed light with the Optical Pulse Technology platform has US Food and Drug Association approval for the management of Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)-associated Dry Eye Disease (DED) by improving meibomian gland function and reducing inflammation. Radiofrequency treatments result in meibum melting. Combination therapy may offer superior outcomes for DED and MGD.

We describe the generation of far-infrared radiation using an optically pumped molecular laser along with the measurement of their frequencies with heterodyne techniques. The experimental system and techniques are demonstrated using difluoromethane (CH2F2) as the laser medium whose results include three new laser emissions and eight measured laser frequencies.
