Soil Ph Testing

Soil pH testing is the chemical measurement of soil acidity or alkalinity, a key property that influences nutrient availability, microbial activity, and plant growth. In a typical test, water or a salt solution extracts soluble ions from a soil sample, and a calibrated pH electrode measures hydrogen ion activity; indicator dyes can provide a visual alternative. Results help researchers and growers evaluate soil conditions, identify potential nutrient limitations or toxicities, and determine whether amendments such as lime are appropriate. In chemistry and environmental science, soil pH testing supports fertility management, ecological studies, contamination assessment, and reproducible analysis of soil systems.

The Lysimeter Carbon Dioxide Gradient Facility creates a 250 to 500 µl L-1 linear carbon dioxide gradient in temperature-controlled chambers housing grassland plant communities on clay, silty clay, and sandy soil monoliths. The facility is used to determine how past and future carbon dioxide levels affect grassland carbon cycling.

Repeated soil sampling has recently been shown to be an effective way to monitor forest soil change over years and decades. To support its use, a protocol is presented that synthesizes the latest information on soil resampling methods to aid in the design and implementation of successful soil monitoring programs.

Analysis of Earthworm Populations in Soil

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University Using mustard, Lumbricus terrestris earthworm populations can be sampled directly from soil depths without landscape disturbance or toxicity. Earthworms can then be counted for data and statistical analysis using a bar graph and student’s t-test. Monitoring earthworm populations is a vital technique for environmental scientists, as multiple species of earthworms (most notably those from the suborder Lumbricina) have...
