Blood Flow Velocity

Blood flow velocity is the speed at which blood moves through a vessel, a measurable feature that helps characterize circulation in normal and developing organisms. It depends on the volume of blood passing a point over time and changes with factors such as cardiac output, vessel diameter, pressure gradients, and vascular resistance; as vessels branch, the total cross-sectional area can alter local velocity. In developmental biology, measuring velocity in embryonic or growing vascular networks helps reveal how circulation begins, how vessels remodel, and how fluid-induced shear stress influences endothelial cells. These measurements connect physical blood movement with vascular patterning, tissue oxygen delivery, and cardiovascular development.

2014

A method is presented to measure microcirculatory blood flow velocity in pulmonary cancer metastases of the pleural surface in rats in an automated fashion, using closed-chest pulmonary intravital microscopy. This model has potential to be used as a widespread tool to perform physiologic research on pulmonary metastases in rodents.

Micro-particle Image Velocimetry for Velocity Profile Measurements of Micro Blood Flows

Micro-particle image velocimetry (μPIV) is used to visualize paired images of micro particles seeded in blood flows which are cross-correlated to give an accurate velocity profile. Shear rate, maximum velocity, velocity profile shape, and flow rate, each of which has clinical applications, can be derived from these measurements.

Source: Hage, B. D. et. al., Functional Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound for Monitoring Cerebral Blood Flow. J. Vis. Exp. (2021) This video demonstrates the use of Doppler ultrasound as a functional imaging tool to measure cerebral blood flow velocity, or CBFV in real time. It highlights how frequency shifts in the middle cerebral artery during tasks like breath-holding reveal changes in CBFV, offering insights into brain activity and vascular dynamics.

Velocity and Acceleration in Steady and Unsteady Flow

2025

In fluid mechanics, velocity and acceleration are key concepts for analyzing particle motion in both steady and unsteady flow. Consider a fluid particle moving along a pathline, where its velocity depends on its position and time. The particle's acceleration is obtained by differentiating the velocity with respect to time. The acceleration can be generalized to any point in the flow, and expressed as components along three perpendicular directions, representing changes in velocity over time.
