Pharyngeal Pouch Dissection

Pharyngeal pouch dissection is a microsurgical technique for isolating embryonic pharyngeal pouches, endodermal outgrowths that form several organs and tissues, making it valuable for studying vertebrate development. Under microscopy, surrounding embryonic tissues are carefully removed while the pouch epithelium and its connections to the pharyngeal endoderm are preserved for analysis or further culture. This preparation allows researchers to examine pouch formation, tissue interactions, cell fate, and developmental signaling, including processes that shape the thymus, parathyroid glands, and related structures. The approach supports investigations of organ specification and congenital defects linked to abnormal pharyngeal development.

Source: Wanderer, S., et al. Arterial Pouch Microsurgical Bifurcation Aneurysm Model in the Rabbit. J. Vis. Exp. (2020)This video demonstrates the creation of an experimental aneurysm model in a rabbit using an elastase-treated vessel pouch. After excising a segment of the right CCA, the pouch is treated with elastase, then sutured to the left CCA to restore blood flow. The resulting stress on the weakened pouch walls induces aneurysm formation.

Introduction Acute pharyngitis is the inflammation of the back of the throat (pharynx), commonly resulting in a sore throat. It is a frequently encountered condition that prompts individuals to seek medical advice. Classification Acute pharyngitis can be categorized based on its underlying cause: • Viral: Accounting for 40% to 60% of cases, viral infections are the most prevalent cause. Common cold viruses, influenza, adenovirus, and Epstein-Barr virus (mononucleosis) are among the most...

Chronic Pharyngitis

Chronic pharyngitis refers to persistent inflammation of the pharyngial mucosa. Etiology It often arises from persistent viral or bacterial infections affecting sinuses and tonsils. Additional contributing factors include inadequate dental hygiene, mouth breathing, recurring tonsillitis, allergic rhinitis, laryngopharyngeal reflux, and exposure to smoke, chemicals, and other environmental pollutants. Allergic reactions to pollen, mold, and pet dander, chronic cough, excessive voice usage,...

Streptococcal pharyngitis, commonly known as “strep throat,” is an acute infection of the oropharyngeal tissues caused by the Gram‑positive Group A Streptococcus (Streptococcus pyogenes). Transmission occurs primarily through respiratory droplets expelled during coughing, sneezing, or talking.Mechanisms of Host Entry and Immune EvasionUpon entering the host, S. pyogenes adheres to the mucosal epithelial cells of the pharynx via surface proteins, notably lipoteichoic acid and the antiphagocytic...
