Dust Concentration

Dust concentration is the amount of particulate matter suspended in a given volume of air, a key engineering measure for evaluating air quality, workplace conditions, and process performance. It depends on particle generation, dispersion, airflow, settling, and removal through ventilation or filtration, and engineers commonly assess it by collecting airborne particles over a defined sampling period or using real-time sensors. Measuring dust concentration supports the design of control systems, including local exhaust ventilation, enclosure, and filtration, while helping assess worker exposure, equipment efficiency, and environmental release. Accurate monitoring also informs safer industrial operations and compliance with relevant air-quality requirements.

We present a technique to achieve low-velocity to intermediate-velocity collisions between fragile dust aggregates in the laboratory. For this purpose, two vacuum drop-tower setups have been developed that allow collision velocities between <0.01 and ~10 m/sec. The collision events are recorded by high-speed imaging.

Dust charging and mobilization is demonstrated in three experiments with exposure to thermal plasma with beam electrons, beam electrons only, or ultraviolet (UV) radiation only. These experiments present the advanced understanding of electrostatic dust transport and its role in shaping the surfaces of airless planetary bodies.

Concentration Cells

A concentration cell is a type of a voltaic cell constructed by connecting two almost identical half-cells, both based on the same half-reaction and using the same electrode, differing only in the concentration of one redox species. A concentration cell's potential, therefore, is determined only by the concentration difference of the particular redox species. Consider the following voltaic cell: From the given information, the cell potential of this concentration cell can be calculated using...

Source: Smaa Koraym at Johns Hopkins University, MD, USA Concentration DependenceExpand In this experiment, you will combine varying concentrations of aqueous HCl and sodium thiosulfate to make solid sulfur, which rapidly gathers into opaque yellow particles at a certain sulfur concentration. Since the reaction solution starts clear and colorless, you can easily tell when it reaches that concentration. You'll use the same test tube and total volume each time, so it will take the same amount...
