Electrical Resistance Change

Electrical resistance change is the variation in a material’s opposition to electric current, a measurable effect that reveals changes in physical or environmental conditions. It occurs when resistivity, conductor length, cross-sectional area, temperature, or charge-carrier behavior changes, shifting the relationship between voltage and current described by Ohm’s law. In engineering, this principle supports resistive temperature detectors, strain gauges, displacement sensors, and other devices that convert mechanical or thermal changes into electrical signals. Measuring and calibrating these changes enables structural health monitoring, process control, and condition-based maintenance while improving the sensitivity and reliability of instrumentation systems.

Changing the Direction and Orientation of Electric Field During Electric Pulses Application Improves Plasmid Gene Transfer in vitro

Gene transfection by electroporation is improved approximately two times when orientation of electric field is changed during pulse application, while cell viability is not affected. The increase in gene transfection is caused by the increase of the membrane area which is made competent for DNA entry into the cell.

Assessing Transendothelial Electrical Resistance in an In Vitro Blood-Brain Barrier Model

This video demonstrates a method for assessing transendothelial electrical resistance (TEER) in mouse brain microvascular endothelial cells in vitro. A high TEER value indicates intact endothelial cell junctions, while the addition of activated T cells lowers the TEER value, reflecting disruption of the junctional barrier.

Melting Land and Sea Ice ExpandNOTE: This activity is a simulation of land- and sea-ice melting and their effects on water levels. First, label one graduated cylinder as 'Sea Ice' and the other graduated cylinder as 'Land Ice.' Hypotheses: the experimental hypothesis might be that the land ice melting will cause the water level to rise more than the melting sea ice. The null hypothesis would be that there will be no difference in the change in water level between the two containers. Add 10 ice...

Climate Change - Concepts

The certainty of climate change remains a public controversy despite the consensus among approximately 97% of active climate researchers, who not only agree that the Earth’s climate is changing but also state that this change is intensified by human activity, predominantly carbon emissions 1. The disconnect between the public and the experts is partly due to poor understanding of the mechanisms involved in climate change as well as the differences among essential concepts such as weather and...

2017

This publication describes the fabrication of an organ-on-chip device with integrated electrodes for direct quantification of transendothelial electrical resistance (TEER). For validation, the blood-brain barrier was mimicked inside this microfluidic device and its barrier function was monitored. The presented methods for electrode integration and direct TEER quantification are generally applicable.
