Flux Density

Flux density is the amount of physical flux passing through a unit area, describing how concentrated a field is at a given location. In engineering, magnetic flux density (B) is calculated by dividing magnetic flux through a surface by the area normal to the field and is measured in teslas; material permeability and field geometry influence its distribution. Engineers use flux density to analyze magnetic cores, transformers, inductors, motors, and generators, helping predict saturation, forces, losses, and efficient device dimensions. The concept also supports field mapping and electromagnetic design.

2013

Surface renewal is a micrometeorological method that is being used increasingly to determine energy fluxes, but its technical complexity makes it inaccessible to a broad audience. We describe the steps needed to set up and calibrate a surface renewal field station, to acquire and process data, and to correctly interpret results.

Measurements of CO2 Fluxes at Non-Ideal Eddy Covariance Sites

2019

The presented protocol uses the eddy covariance method at non-typical locations, applicable to all types of short-canopy ecosystems with limited area, on a currently reforested windthrow site in Poland. Details of measuring site setup rules, flux calculations and quality control, and final result analysis, are described.

Electric Flux

2025

The concept of flux describes how much of something goes through a given area. More formally, it is the dot product of a vector field within an area. For a better understanding, consider an open rectangular surface with a small area that is placed in a uniform electric field. The larger the area, the more field lines go through it and, hence, the greater the flux; similarly, the stronger the electric field (represented by a greater density of lines), the greater the flux. On the other hand, if...

Oxygen Flux Measurements to Evaluate Mitochondrial Respiration in Living and Permeabilized Cells

Source: Elettra Leo1, Luiza H.D. Cardoso1, Sabine Schmitt1, Erich Gnaiger11Oroboros InstrumentsThis video explains how oxygen flux is used to assess mitochondrial respiration in living and permeabilized mammalian cells. It demonstrates the sequential use of digitonin, metabolic substrates, ADP, an uncoupler, and an inhibitor to characterize different respiratory states. The resulting oxygen flux profile reveals mitochondrial function and energy-coupling efficiency under defined conditions.

Monitoring B Cell Activation with Antigenic Liposomes using a Calcium-Flux Assay

2025

This video showcases the assessment of B cell activation through the utilization of antigenic liposomes. B cells treated with calcium-sensitive Indo-1 dye are distinguished using flow cytometry, and their violet-to-blue fluorescence ratio is analyzed. As the cells encounter antigenic liposomes, it triggers B cell activation through calcium influx, progressively enhancing the violet-to-blue fluorescence signal ratio over time.
