Impedance Transformation

Impedance transformation is the process of converting a source or load impedance to a different value so that an electrical system operates efficiently and predictably. It works by using components or structures such as transformers, capacitors, inductors, and transmission-line sections to alter the relationship between voltage and current, often through turns ratios or frequency-dependent reactance. Proper transformation can maximize power transfer, reduce signal reflection, and connect circuits with dissimilar impedance levels. In engineering, it is essential in amplifier interfaces, radio-frequency systems, antenna matching, audio equipment, and power electronics, where accurate impedance control improves energy delivery, signal integrity, and system performance.

Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Electrical resistance is the ability of an electrical circuit element to resist the flow of electricity. Resistance is defined by Ohm's Law: (Equation 1) Where is the voltage and is the current. Ohm's law is useful for determining the resistance of ideal resistors. However, many circuit elements are more complex and can't be described by...

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. Transformers are stationary electric machines that step up or down AC voltage. They are typically formed of primary and secondary coils or windings, where the voltage on the primary is stepped up or down at the secondary, or the other way around. When a voltage is applied to one of the windings and current flows in that winding, flux is induced in the magnetic core, coupling both windings. With an AC...

Background In early 20th century, pneumonia was accountable for a large portion of infectious disease deaths1. In order to develop an effective vaccine against pneumonia, Frederick Griffith set out to study two different strains of the Streptococcus pneumoniae: a non-virulent strain with a rough appearance (R-strain) and a virulent strain with a smooth appearance (S-strain) due to an outer polysaccharide capsule2. This outer layer of the S-strain bacteria enabled them to withstand the host...

Consider a string of christmas lights, each bulb symbolizing an impedance element. In this series configuration, the flow of electric current remains uniform across every component. This behavior aligns with Kirchhoff's Voltage Law (KVL), which asserts that the total impedance in such a setup equals the sum of individual impedances—akin to resistors in series. It follows that the voltage from the power source is distributed proportionally among these components, adhering to the voltage division...
