Low Cost Measurement

Low-cost measurement is the design and use of affordable methods, instruments, and sensors to obtain useful quantitative data in engineering. It works by selecting accessible components, converting physical quantities such as temperature, force, or motion into electrical signals, and calibrating the system against a reference while accounting for uncertainty and repeatability. These approaches can support prototyping, field monitoring, education, and resource-limited testing, where conventional equipment may be too expensive or difficult to deploy. Although they may offer lower precision, thoughtful design, validation, and error analysis can produce measurements that are fit for purpose and expand access to engineering experimentation.

Measuring the Switch Cost of Smartphone Use While Walking

2020

This study design measures the task-switching cost of using a smartphone while walking. Participants undergo two experimental conditions: a control condition (walking) and a multitasking condition (texting while walking). Participants switch between these tasks and a direction determining task. EEG data as well as behavioral measures are recorded.

2016

The study of methods to generate on-demand hydrogen for fuel cells continues to grow in importance. However, systems to measure hydrogen evolution from the reaction of chemicals with water can be complicated and expensive. This article details a simple, low-cost, and robust method to measure the evolution of hydrogen gas.

A Low-Cost Apparatus for Measuring Muscle Force–Velocity Relationships

2026

An accessible, low-cost apparatus for measuring human muscle force–velocity–power relationships was developed using inexpensive materials, a 3D-printed gear, a smartphone accelerometer, and Python freeware. Validation against a gold-standard ergometer demonstrated physiologically relevant measurements while providing equitable, hands-on learning opportunities in an undergraduate classroom setting.

Costing Methods: Job Order Costing

2026

Job order costing is a cost accounting system used to assign costs to specific and distinguishable jobs or projects. It is ideal for businesses that produce custom products or services, such as those in the construction, film production, and printing industries. Each job has its own unique requirements, which makes a standardized costing approach unsuitable. In this system, a job cost sheet is maintained for every individual project. This document captures all costs related to that job,...
