Surface Pressure

Surface pressure is the normal force exerted over a defined area at a material boundary, expressed as force per unit area, and it is fundamental to analyzing how solids, liquids, and gases interact. It develops when molecular impacts or mechanical loads transfer momentum to a surface, with the measured value depending on the applied force, contact area, and, for fluids, depth and surrounding conditions. In engineering, surface pressure informs the design of pressure vessels, seals, bearings, fluid systems, and structural interfaces, helping researchers predict deformation, friction, leakage, and failure while selecting suitable materials and operating conditions.

2016

Here, we present a protocol to measure, with high spatial resolution, the unsteady surface pressure in turbulent flows. This method demonstrates the construction of a remote microphone probe (RMP) and the determination of its frequency-dependent, complex transfer function. An analytical determination of the dynamic response is presented and validated.

Hydrostatic Pressure Force on a Plane Surface

2025

When a plane surface is submerged in a fluid, hydrostatic forces develop on the surface due to the fluid's pressure. For horizontal surfaces, the pressure exerted by the fluid is uniform because the depth remains constant. The resultant force is determined by the pressure at the given depth multiplied by the area of the surface, and it acts through the centroid of the surface. For vertical surfaces, the pressure varies with depth, increasing as the distance from the fluid's free surface...

Hydrostatic Pressure Force on a Curved Surface

2025

Hydrostatic pressure on curved surfaces is a fundamental concept in fluid mechanics with broad applications in the civil engineering field. When fluid is in contact with a curved surface, as in a reservoir, dam, or storage tank, it exerts pressure that varies in magnitude and direction along the curved surface. To assess the total hydrostatic force exerted by the fluid on a curved structure, engineers typically isolate the fluid volume adjacent to the surface and analyze the forces acting on...

The laser heated diamond anvil cell combined with synchrotron micro-diffraction techniques allows researchers to explore the nature and properties of new phases of matter at extreme pressure and temperature (PT) conditions. Heterogeneous samples can be characterized in situ under high pressure by 2D mapping and combined powder, single-crystal and multigrain diffraction approaches.
