Anaerobic Sludge

Anaerobic sludge is organic-rich wastewater or biosolids material treated in the absence of oxygen, where microbial activity stabilizes waste and supports resource recovery. In an anaerobic digester, consortia of hydrolytic, acid-forming, acetogenic, and methanogenic microorganisms sequentially break down complex organic matter into simpler compounds, ultimately producing methane-rich biogas and a more stable residual sludge. In environmental engineering, this process reduces sludge volume and odors while generating renewable energy and improving waste management. Understanding anaerobic sludge behavior helps optimize digester conditions, including temperature, pH, organic loading, and retention time, for reliable treatment performance.

Microbial sulfate reduction is a process of great importance in environmental biotechnology. The success of the sulfidogenic reactors depends among other factors on the microbial composition of the sludge. Here, we present a protocol to develop sulfidogenic sludge from hydrothermal vents sediments in a UASB reactor for reductive dechlorination purposes.

Anaerobic Digestion of Bioplastics for Biogas Production

Begin with an anaerobic digester, a sealed, oxygen-free reactor seeded with a synthetic sludge that mimics the settled solids from wastewater. The sludge contains mesophilic anaerobic microbes, a mixed microbial community. These microbes thrive at moderate temperatures and drive the digestion of the sludge’s organic matter.Continuously mix the sludge to sustain the bacterial activity and promote digestion.Later, add bioplastics, which are biodegradable polymers, into the sludge.During incubation,...
