Peripheral Blood Collection

Peripheral blood collection is the standardized process of obtaining circulating blood from a peripheral vein or capillary source for laboratory analysis, making it a foundational method in immunology and infection research. During venipuncture, skin is disinfected, a sterile needle accesses the vessel, and blood is transferred into appropriately labeled tubes, with anticoagulants or clot-activating conditions selected according to whether plasma, serum, or cellular fractions are required. Proper collection, handling, and transport preserve leukocytes, antibodies, nucleic acids, and other analytes for applications including immune profiling, pathogen detection, serology, hematology, and monitoring responses to infection or vaccination.

A Mouse Tail Snip Procedure for Peripheral Blood Collection and Plasma Isolation

2025

In this video, we demonstrate a tail-snipping procedure in a mouse model to collect peripheral blood. The collected blood is subsequently subjected to centrifugation to separate plasma, which can be used for further experiments.

2026

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Blood sampling is commonly performed in laboratory rabbits for research and clinical applications. The collection site is selected based on the required sample volume, sampling frequency, and study objectives. As a general...

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Blood collection is a common procedure in swine research and clinical studies. The choice of sampling site depends on the animal's age, body size, the volume of blood required, the study objectives and approved IACUC...

2017

Extracellular vesicles present in blood have been suggested as novel biomarkers for various diseases. Here, we present a protocol for the isolation of large plasma membrane-derived microvesicles from peripheral blood samples and their subsequent analysis by conventional flow cytometry and Western Blotting.
