Reflux Esophagitis

Reflux esophagitis is inflammation and injury of the esophageal lining caused by repeated backflow of stomach contents, most often acidic gastric fluid. Reflux can overwhelm protective barriers, including the lower esophageal sphincter and mucosal defenses, allowing acid and digestive enzymes to irritate epithelial cells and trigger inflammatory signaling and immune-cell recruitment. In immunology and infection research, this condition provides a model for studying how chemical injury activates local immune responses and how inflammation differs from infectious esophageal disease. Understanding these mechanisms supports diagnosis, symptom management, acid-suppressive treatment, and prevention of complications such as erosions, strictures, and Barrett’s esophagus.

The Effect of Reflux Ratio on Tray Distillation Efficiency

2023

Source: Kerry M. Dooley and Michael G. Benton, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA Tray and packed columns are both commonly used for distillation, absorption, and stripping separation operations.1,2 The goal of this experiment is to distill a mixture of alcohols (methanol, isopropanol) and water in a sieve tray column and examine how closely simple theories of distillation based on equilibrium assumptions are followed. Sieve trays provide maximum...

Assembly of a Reflux System for Heated Chemical Reactions

2023

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Philip Miller — Imperial College London Many chemical experiments require elevated temperatures before any reaction is observed, however heating solutions of reactants can lead to loss of reactants and/or solvent via evaporation if their boiling points are sufficiently low. In order to ensure no loss of reactants or solvent, a reflux system is used in order to condense any vapors produced on heating and return these condensates to the reaction...

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is the backward flow of stomach contents (acid, pepsin, or bile) into the esophagus, causing mucosal inflammation known as esophagitis. It results from failure of antireflux mechanisms, mainly the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), influenced by mechanical and physiological factors.Etiology and Risk FactorsGERD develops when LES function is weakened or when intra-abdominal pressure increases. Risk factors include aging, obesity, and sliding hiatal hernia,...
