Cold Sterile Saline

Cold sterile saline is a sterile salt solution cooled below room temperature for controlled use in medicine. It provides a clean fluid for irrigation while transferring heat away from contacted tissue; the cooling effect depends on temperature, contact time, and fluid exchange. In clinical settings, it may support wound or operative irrigation, help remove surface debris, and temporarily cool localized areas when appropriate. Its value lies in combining sterility with thermal control, although preparation, storage, and application must follow clinical protocols to preserve safety and effectiveness.

Source: Robert M. Rioux & Suprita Jharimune, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Working with extreme temperatures, both high and low, is an integral part of many laboratory operations. For many, mentioning a laboratory instantly evokes the mental picture of a Bunsen burner. Bunsen burners and hot plates are used extensively in small and large operations in research laboratories and industries, thus making it necessary for all users to be aware of their safe handling...

Burch in their book The Principles of Humane Experimental Technique. The 3 R's are replacement, reduction, and refinement of the use of animals in research. The use of cell lines and tissue cultures that originated from research animals is a replacement technique, as it allows for many experiments to be conducted in vitro. Harvesting...

A Hypertonic Saline Injection Technique for Inducing Glaucoma in Rats

2025

This video demonstrates glaucoma induction in an anesthetized rat by injecting hypertonic saline into the episcleral vein. The saline enters the trabecular meshwork via Schlemm's canal, causing tissue scarring, which blocks aqueous humor outflow and raises intraocular pressure. The elevated pressure damages retinal ganglion cells, leading to glaucoma.

2010

We seek to define the neural immune signaling responsible for cold-preconditioning as means to identify novel targets for therapeutics development to protect brain before injury onset. We present strategies for such work that require biological systems, experimental manipulations plus technical capacities that are highly reproducible and sensitive.
