Extra-oral Photography

Extra-oral photography is the standardized capture of images of structures outside the oral cavity, such as the face and profile, for clinical documentation and assessment. In medical and dental settings, clinicians use a camera, controlled lighting, fixed patient positioning, and consistent views and scale to reduce distortion and make photographs comparable over time. These images record facial symmetry, soft-tissue features, treatment changes, and outcomes, supporting diagnosis, treatment planning, communication, education, and research. When protocols remain consistent, extra-oral photographs provide a reproducible visual record that complements examination findings and other clinical records.
