Low Contrast Letter Acuity

Low contrast letter acuity is a measure of visual performance that tests how well a person can identify letters when they differ only slightly in brightness from the background. Unlike standard high-contrast acuity, it can reveal reduced contrast sensitivity that affects functional vision. During testing, a person reads standardized letters presented at progressively lower contrast, and the lowest contrast level identified defines the acuity threshold. This assessment supports evaluation of visual impairment associated with ocular and neurological conditions, helps clinicians monitor disease progression or treatment response, and provides a more realistic measure of vision in everyday environments than high-contrast testing alone.

Reading in color is a new method for training letter-color associations that are typically found only in grapheme-color synesthetes. It involves an implicit form of training that has potential for long-term associative training methods because the training is a byproduct of reading and any text can be colored.

A novel motion-based acuity test that allows the assessment of central and peripheral visual processing in low-vision and healthy individuals, along with goggles limiting peripheral vision compatible with MRI protocols, are described here. This method offers a comprehensive vision assessment for functional impairments and dysfunctions of the visual system.
