Midline Shift Estimation

Midline shift estimation is a neuroimaging assessment that measures displacement of the brain’s central structures, providing an indicator of intracranial mass effect and potential neurological deterioration. On head CT or MRI, clinicians establish an anatomical midline reference and quantify how far structures such as the septum pellucidum or third ventricle deviate from it, often in millimeters. This measurement supports evaluation of traumatic brain injury, intracranial hemorrhage, tumors, edema, and other space-occupying conditions. Although it complements clinical examination and other imaging findings, consistent estimation helps characterize disease severity, guide urgent management, and monitor changes over time.

Sound Waves and Doppler Shift

Source: Arianna Brown, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA Waves are disturbances that propagate through a material medium or empty space. Light waves can travel through a vacuum and some forms of matter, and are transverse in nature, which means that the oscillations are perpendicular to the direction of propagation. However, sound waves are pressure waves that travel through an elastic medium like air,...

Electrophoretic Mobility Shift Assay (EMSA)

The electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA) is a biochemical procedure used to elucidate binding between proteins and nucleic acids. In this assay a radiolabeled nucleic acid and test protein are mixed. Binding is determined via gel electrophoresis which separates components based on mass, charge, and conformation. This video shows the concepts of EMSA and a general procedure, including gel and protein preparation, binding, electrophoresis, and detection. Applications covered in this video...

New Variations for Strategy Set-shifting in the Rat

Set-shifting, a form of behavioral flexibility, requires an attentional shift from one stimulus dimension to another. We extended an established rodent set-shifting task1 by requiring attention to different stimuli according to context. The task was combined with specific lesions to identify neuron subtypes underlying a successful shift.

What are Estimates?

It isn't easy to measure a parameter such as the mean height or the mean weight of a population. So, we draw samples from the population and calculate the mean height or mean weight of the individuals in the sample. This sample data acts as a representative measure of the population parameter. These sample statistics are known as estimates. The estimate for the mean of a sample is denoted by ͞x, whereas the mean of the population is designated as μ. Further, parameters such as the mean,...
