Non-p-wave Cardiac Rhythm

Non-P-wave cardiac rhythms are electrocardiographic patterns in which normal, organized atrial depolarization is absent, altered, or not visibly represented by distinct P waves. They arise when atrial electrical activity becomes chaotic, as in atrial fibrillation, or when impulse formation originates from the atrioventricular junction or ventricles, producing an escape or ectopic rhythm. Recognizing these patterns on an ECG helps clinicians distinguish supraventricular from ventricular sources, assess rate and conduction, and identify potentially unstable conditions. Accurate interpretation supports timely management of arrhythmias, including monitoring, medication, cardioversion, or other rhythm-directed interventions.

Electrophysiology of Normal Cardiac Rhythm

2024

The normal cardiac rhythm is a synchronized electrical activity that facilitates the regular and coordinated contraction of the heart muscle. This process is essential for efficient blood circulation throughout the body. The fundamental elements involved in establishing and maintaining this rhythm include the unique electrical properties of cardiac muscle cells, the sinoatrial (SA) node's pacemaker function, the specialized conducting system, and the ionic mechanisms underlying each phase of...
