Risk Classification

Risk classification is the systematic grouping of patients, conditions, or clinical situations according to the likelihood and potential severity of adverse health outcomes. In medicine, it combines patient characteristics, medical history, examination findings, diagnostic results, and validated assessment criteria to assign risk categories that support consistent clinical judgment. These classifications help clinicians prioritize monitoring, select preventive or therapeutic strategies, guide triage, and communicate prognosis across care teams. Risk classification also supports clinical research, resource allocation, and evaluation of treatment outcomes, although categories should be interpreted alongside individual patient circumstances and updated as new evidence or clinical information becomes available.
