Utils Measurement

Utils measurement refers to the economic practice of representing a consumer’s satisfaction from goods or services in hypothetical units called utils, helping analyze preferences and choice. In a cardinal utility framework, total utility sums satisfaction across consumed units, while marginal utility measures the additional satisfaction from one more unit; as consumption rises, marginal utility commonly declines. Economists use these measures to explain demand, consumer equilibrium, and the allocation of limited income, often by comparing marginal utility per unit of price across products. Although utility cannot be observed directly, the framework provides a structured way to model trade-offs and connect individual preferences with market behavior.
