Mossy Fiber Projections

Mossy fiber projections are axonal connections that carry information from hippocampal dentate granule cells to CA3 pyramidal neurons, forming a key pathway for memory-related processing. Their large presynaptic boutons create powerful, glutamate-mediated excitatory synapses, while sparse and divergent connectivity allows small groups of granule cells to strongly influence selected CA3 neurons. These projections help transform and distribute activity within hippocampal circuits involved in pattern separation, associative memory, and spatial representation. Studying mossy fiber projections with tracing, electrophysiology, and imaging methods provides insight into normal learning as well as circuit changes associated with epilepsy, aging, and neurological disease.

Fischer Projections

Learning to draw Fischer projections of molecules and understanding their relevance plays a crucial role in the visual depiction of organic molecules. A Fischer projection is a two-dimensional projection on a planar surface to simplify the three-dimensional wedge–dash representation of molecules. This is especially helpful in the case of molecules with multiple chiral centers that can be difficult to draw. Here, all the bonds of interest are represented as horizontal or vertical lines. While...

Different notations are used to represent the three-dimensional structure of molecules on two-dimensional surfaces. One of the most commonly used representations is the dash-wedge formula. The dashed wedges, solid wedges, and the plane lines indicate the groups situated behind the plane, coming out of the plane, and in the plane, respectively. The organic molecules rotate across the single bonds leading to numerous temporary three-dimensional structures of varying energy known as conformers.

This method aims at locating vertical subsurface defects. Here, we couple a laser with a spatial light modulator and trigger its video input to heat a sample surface deterministically with two anti-phased modulated lines while acquiring highly resolved thermal images. The defect position is retrieved from evaluating thermal wave interference minima.
