Visual Stimulation

Visual stimulation is the controlled presentation of light, images, patterns, or movement to activate the visual system and study how the brain processes sensory information. Stimuli enter through the eyes, where retinal photoreceptors convert light into neural signals that travel through the optic nerve to visual areas of the brain; features such as contrast, color, orientation, and motion shape the resulting response. In neuroscience, researchers use visual stimulation with behavioral tasks, electrophysiology, or brain imaging to examine perception, attention, development, and neural circuit function. Carefully designed stimuli also support research on sensory disorders, plasticity, and brain-computer interfaces.

This paper describes the procedures for tactile stimulation of rat pups and subsequent Golgi-Cox staining of neuronal morphology. Tactile stimulation is a positive experience that is administered in the perinatal period by stroking pups with a household duster. Golgi-cox staining is a reliable procedure permitting the visualization of entire neurons.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has proven to be a useful tool in investigating the role of the articulatory motor cortex in speech perception. This article describes how to record motor evoked potentials (MEPs) from the lip muscles and how to disrupt the motor lip representation using repetitive TMS.
