Interface Media

Interface media are regions or material boundaries where two different physical media meet, making them important for understanding how waves, fields, energy, and matter behave across a change in properties. At an interface, differences in density, refractive index, conductivity, or acoustic impedance impose boundary conditions that can produce reflection, transmission, refraction, absorption, or mode conversion. In physics, analyzing interface media helps explain optical coatings, fiber optics, acoustic devices, electromagnetic shielding, fluid boundaries, and semiconductor junctions. These principles support the design of sensors, communication systems, energy technologies, and materials whose performance depends on controlled interfacial behavior.

Protein-protein Interfaces

Many proteins form complexes to carry out their functions, making protein-protein interactions (PPIs) essential for an organism's survival. Most PPIs are stabilized by numerous weak noncovalent chemical forces. The physical shape of the interfaces determines the way two proteins interact. Many globular proteins have closely-matching shapes on their surfaces, which form a large number of weak bonds. Additionally, many PPIs occur between two helices or between a surface cleft and a polypeptide...

This article describes a biofabrication approach: deposition of stimuli-responsive polysaccharides in the presence of biased electrodes to create biocompatible films which can be functionalized with cells or proteins. We demonstrate a bench-top strategy for the generation of the films as well as their basic uses for creating interactive biofunctionalized surfaces for lab-on-a-chip applications.
