Central Route Processing

Central route processing is a form of persuasion in which people carefully evaluate the quality, logic, and relevance of a message’s arguments rather than relying mainly on surface cues. In the elaboration likelihood model, it occurs when individuals have both the motivation and ability to think about the information, leading them to generate and assess cognitive responses. Attitude changes produced through this route are generally more enduring, resistant to counterpersuasion, and predictive of behavior than changes based on peripheral cues. Researchers and practitioners apply the concept to advertising, health communication, education, and decisions about when detailed evidence is most likely to influence beliefs.

Persuasion is the process of changing our attitude toward something based on some kind of communication. Much of the persuasion we experience comes from outside forces. How do people convince others to change their attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors? What communications do you receive that attempt to persuade you to change your attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors? Yale Attitude Change Approach The topic of persuasion has been one of the most extensively researched areas in social psychology...

2017

By assessing pain in response to repetitive or different types of standardized stimuli, dynamic quantitative sensory testing (QST) can reveal changes in the central processing of pain. We present methods to optimize and individualize two dynamic QST measures: temporal summation (TS) and conditioned pain modulation (CPM).

The Central Dogma

Overview The central dogma of biology states that information encoded in the DNA is transferred to messenger RNA (mRNA), which then directs the synthesis of protein. The set of instructions that enable the mRNA nucleotide sequence to be decoded into amino acids is called the genetic code. The universal nature of this genetic code has spurred advances in scientific research, agriculture, and medicine. RNA Is the Missing Link between DNA and Proteins In the early 1900s, scientists discovered...

The "center" of a data set is also a way of describing location. The two most widely used measures of the "center" of the data are the mean (average) and the median. The words "mean" and "average" are often used interchangeably. The substitution of one word for the other is common practice. The technical term is "arithmetic mean" and "average" is technically a center location. However, in practice among non-statisticians, "average" is commonly accepted for "arithmetic mean." Another measure of...

Source: James W Bonz, MD, Emergency Medicine, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut, USA Central venous access is necessary in a multitude of clinical situations, including vascular access, vasopressor and caustic medication delivery, central venous pressure monitoring, intravascular device delivery (pacing wires, Swann-Ganz catheters), volume resuscitation, total parental nutrition, hemodialysis, and frequent phlebotomy. Safe reliable placement of a central venous catheter (CVC) in...
