Kaplan-meier Method

The Kaplan-Meier method is a statistical approach for estimating the probability that individuals remain free of a defined event over time, making it valuable for analyzing time-to-event data. It constructs a stepwise survival curve by ordering observed event times, calculating survival probabilities at each event, and accounting for censored observations, in which follow-up ends before the event occurs. Researchers use Kaplan-Meier analysis to compare survival experiences between groups, assess treatment outcomes, and summarize the timing of events in clinical, epidemiological, and reliability studies. Its visual and quantitative representation supports interpretation of incomplete follow-up data and informs further statistical modeling.

Kaplan-Meier Approach

2025

The Kaplan-Meier estimator is a non-parametric method used to estimate the survival function from time-to-event data. In medical research, it is frequently employed to measure the proportion of patients surviving for a certain period after treatment. This estimator is fundamental in analyzing time-to-event data, making it indispensable in clinical trials, epidemiological studies, and reliability engineering. By estimating survival probabilities, researchers can evaluate treatment effectiveness,...

This study evaluates prognostic systems for colorectal signet-ring cell carcinoma patients using machine learning models and competing risk analyses. It identifies log odds of positive lymph nodes as a superior predictor compared to pN staging, demonstrating strong predictive performance and aiding clinical decision-making through robust survival prediction tools.

Methods of Sterilization I: Physical Methods

As used in a healthcare facility, sterilization destroys all microorganisms through physical or chemical methods. The physical method includes steam, dry heat, boiling water, and radiation. Steam sterilization uses non-toxic, low-cost moist heat in the form of saturated steam under pressure, which is fast, microbicidal, and sporicidal, and quickly warms and penetrates fabrics. Autoclaves, or steam sterilizers, expose each item to direct steam contact for a predetermined time at the necessary...

Methods of Sterilization II: Chemical Methods

In healthcare, the chemical method of sterilization uses chemical sterilants to treat surgical instruments and medical supplies to help prevent the transmission of infectious pathogens to patients. Due to heat sensitivity, most medical supplies and equipment should not be exposed to high temperatures. These parts include rubber, plastic, glass, and other similar elements. Using chemical sterilization rather than heat to clean out equipment is recommended. It eradicates and removes all bacteria,...
