Question 1

What are the three main components of executive function tested in autism research?

Accepted Answer

Executive function comprises flexibility—adapting thoughts to changing environments; planning—determining actions needed to achieve specific goals; and inhibition—the ability to stop ongoing behaviors. These components are often impaired in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder and can be measured through specialized neuropsychological tests to assess cognitive deficits.

Question 2

How does the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test measure executive function?

Accepted Answer

The Wisconsin Card Sorting Test presents participants with stimulus cards incorporating color, shape, and number patterns. Participants must sort response cards based on feedback, discovering the sorting rule through trial and error. The rule changes without warning after 10 correct placements. Perseveration—continuing to use an incorrect sorting strategy despite feedback—is the key dependent variable measured.

Question 3

What does the Tower of London test reveal about planning abilities?

Accepted Answer

The Tower of London requires participants to move colored disks on three pegs from an initial arrangement to match a goal state in the minimum number of moves. The test measures planning and re-evaluation of strategies. The dependent variable is the number of moves exceeding the minimum required, revealing deficits in complex planning and updating of planned actions.

Question 4

Why do incongruent trials in the Stroop test take longer to complete?

Accepted Answer

In incongruent Stroop trials, the word name and font color mismatch—for example, the word green written in blue. Participants must inhibit the automatic response of reading the word and instead say the actual color of the letters. This cognitive inhibition requirement slows reaction times compared to congruent trials where word and color match.

Question 5

How do executive function deficits differ across neurodevelopmental disorders?

Accepted Answer

Different neurodevelopmental disorders show distinct executive function profiles. Autism Spectrum Disorder shows deficits in the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test and Tower of London, indicating impaired flexibility and planning. ADHD demonstrates impairments in Tower of London and Stroop tasks. Tourette's Syndrome primarily displays deficits in the Stroop task, suggesting these differential patterns can aid in diagnosis.

Question 6

What do the experimental results show about cognitive inhibition in autism?

Accepted Answer

In the Stroop test comparing children with Autism Spectrum Disorder to typically developing controls, both groups demonstrated similar reaction times between congruent and incongruent conditions. This finding indicates that cognitive inhibition was not significantly affected in autism, suggesting executive function deficits in autism are more specific to flexibility and planning rather than inhibition.

Question 7

How can neuropsychological testing lead to targeted rehabilitation for executive dysfunction?

Accepted Answer

By identifying specific executive function deficits through behavioral tests, researchers can develop targeted rehabilitation programs. For example, transcranial direct current stimulation can target brain regions like the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex before and after behavioral tasks. Measuring whether stimulation enhances executive function provides a promising approach for rehabilitating disorders with distinct neural underpinnings.
