Q1: What is the nucleus and what role does it play in eukaryotic cells?
The nucleus is a membrane-bound organelle that serves as the control center of eukaryotic cells. It houses chromosomal DNA, which controls gene expression and regulates protein production. The nucleus is surrounded by a double membrane nuclear envelope containing protein-lined pores that control the flow of molecules, ions, and messenger RNA between the nucleoplasm and cytoplasm.
Q2: How does chromatin structure change during the cell cycle?
During interphase when cells are not dividing, chromatin fibers are loosely arranged and resemble tangled strings, allowing easier DNA access during transcription. When the cell prepares to divide, chromatin fibers compress tightly into distinct, linear chromosomes that can be easily segregated into daughter cells during cell division.
Q3: What is the nucleolus and what does it produce?
