Behavior refers to an organism’s actions and responses to its environment and other organisms. Many behaviors have evolved through natural selection because they increase an individual's chances of survival or reproductive success. Behaviors can be categorized as foraging, social, and reproductive.
Foraging behavior is the way animals find and get food.
For example, wolves hunt prey in groups. This behavior helps wolves get the energy and nutrients they need to survive.
Social behaviors are interactions between individuals in a population. These behaviors can improve survival and help animals respond to environmental challenges.
For example, meerkats give alarm calls to warn others about predators.
Reproductive behaviors, such as choosing a mate and caring for offspring, help animals pass traits to future generations.
For example, peacocks display colorful tail feathers to attract mates during courtship. Emperor penguins care for their chicks after hatching, increasing the likelihood that their offspring will survive.
