Cells use different signaling mechanisms to communicate with nearby and distant cells. These signaling pathways help coordinate growth, metabolism, and cellular responses to environmental changes.
Many forms of cell signaling use chemical messengers called ligands, which bind to specific receptor proteins on target cells. This communication between cells is called intercellular signaling.
After a ligand binds to its receptor, the target cell starts intracellular signaling. The cell relays the message through a signaling cascade, where signaling proteins and second messengers often amplify the signal inside the cell.
Depending on the distance between cells, signaling can occur through different mechanisms. In autocrine signaling, the ligand acts on the same cell that released it, while paracrine signaling affects nearby cells within the same tissue.
Another form of cell communication is contact-dependent, or juxtacrine, signaling, where a ligand attached to one cell binds directly to a receptor on a neighboring cell.
In some cases, cells communicate directly through gap junctions in animal cells or through plasmodesmata in plant cells, allowing small molecules and ions to pass between neighboring cells.
Some cells communicate across long distances through endocrine signaling. In this process, endocrine glands release hormones into the bloodstream, which carries the signals to distant target tissues or organs.
Neurons use synaptic signaling to rapidly communicate with other neurons, muscle cells, or gland cells. In this process, neurons release neurotransmitters that bind to receptors on target cells and help transmit signals.
Even bacteria communicate through cell signaling. During quorum sensing, bacterial cells release signaling molecules and respond together once the signaling molecule concentration reaches a certain level.
In all forms of cell signaling, the receiving cell ultimately produces a specific response. As a result, cells can activate enzymes, change gene expression, migrate, divide, or release specific molecules.
