Coordination Number and Geometry

Primary valence refers to the oxidation number of the metal ion, determined by summing charges from ligands and counterions. Secondary valence is the coordination number—the count of ligands directly bonded to the central metal ion. For example, in a rhodium complex with six bonded ligands, the secondary valence is six. Understanding both valences is essential for analyzing coordination compounds and Werner's coordination theory.

Smaller ligands occupy less space, allowing more to coordinate to a metal ion. For instance, fluorine coordinates six times to iron(III), while larger chlorine coordinates only four times. Ligand charge also matters: neutral water molecules allow nickel(II) a coordination number of six, but anionic chloride ions reduce it to four. Both factors influence how many ligands can bind to the central metal.

Metal ions with eight d-electrons, such as palladium(II), adopt square planar geometry. Those with ten d-electrons, like zinc(II), exhibit tetrahedral geometry. The valence electrons in the d-subshell determine the spatial arrangement of ligands. This distinction is crucial when studying crystal field theory tetrahedral and square planar complexes and predicting complex structures.

An octahedral complex has a coordination number of six, with ligands positioned at the corners of an octahedron. Four ligands form a square plane, while two additional ligands occupy positions above and below at equivalent distances. This arrangement creates eight triangular faces and 90-degree bond angles between adjacent ligands around the central metal ion.

First, identify the charges contributed by all ligands and counterions. Sum these charges, then calculate the metal ion's oxidation number to make the overall complex electrically neutral. If all ligands are neutral, the complex ion charge equals the metal's oxidation number. This systematic approach ensures accurate determination of the metal's oxidation state in any coordination compound.

Complexes with coordination number two are linear, with ligands positioned 180 degrees apart on opposite sides of the metal ion. Coordination number five produces two possible geometries: trigonal bipyramidal or square pyramidal. These less common geometries occur in specific metal-ligand combinations and are important for understanding the full range of coordination chemistry.

Metal ions like cobalt(III) and platinum(II) possess inherent coordination numbers of six and four, respectively, due to their electronic structure and bonding preferences. However, many metal ions such as nickel(II) exhibit variable coordination numbers ranging from two to six, depending on ligand size, charge, and steric factors. This variability reflects the flexibility of metal-ligand bonding in coordination complexes.
